Two French doctors have been accused of racism after suggesting vaccines against coronavirus should first be tested on people in Africa.
The comments were made on the French television channel LCI, during a discussion about Covid-19 trials set to be launched in Europe and Australia to see if the BCG tuberculosis vaccine could be used to treat the novel disease.
Head of intensive care at Paris Chochin Hospital, Jean-Paul Mira, said Africa would offer better testing conditions.
‘If I could be provocative, shouldn’t we be doing this study in Africa, where there are no masks, no treatment, no intensive care, rather as was done with certain studies on AIDS, where things are tested on prostitutes because it’s known that they are highly exposed (to HIV)?’ he said.
Camille Locht, research director at France’s national health institute, agreed.
He said: ‘You’re right, we are thinking in parallel by the way about a study in Africa with the same kind of approach, (but) it doesn’t prevent us from being able to think about a study in Europe and Australia at the same time.’
Scientists who carry out clinical trials try to find conditions in which large numbers of people are exposed to the disease, as this gives a better opportunity for testing a new drug.

DeleteThe corona virus vaccine is what the whole world hopes for with this pandemic. If Europe feels they have found the vaccine for corona, they should test it on their continent reason being they are the ones suffering more and they have drastic number of deaths as compared to other continents. Why should they waste the vaccine on the least affected continent? Those doctors should rather test that vaccine on themselves😏
